The Substance And The Shadow an autobiography of Dilip Kumar launched by Bollywood Icons

For all those who were eagerly waiting for the biography of the legendary Dilip Kumar, this news will surely be music to your ears.  It became a momentous evening. When with the presence of Hindi cinema icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Aamir Khan, along with veteran actress Saira Banu and author Udaya Tara Nayar, thespian Dilip Kumar's long-awaited autobiography "The Substance and The Shadow" was launched.

Penned by Udaya Tara Nayar Dilip Saab discloses a story from an unknown newcomer to a Bollywood Super Star, a story about his life journey of 91 years we know would be an inspiring one.

Dilip Kumar is a very private man in a very public industry. Thus, while so much has been written about him in the media there remains an aura of mystery about him. In this book the actor candidly recounts his interactions and relationships with a wide variety of people not only from his family and the film fraternity but also from other walks of life, including politicians.

He narrates his bitter break up with actor Madhubala and also his wedding to Saira Banu, who was 22 years his junior. Saira Banu says,” Everyone knows that I was madly in love with him from the age of 12. I keep gushing my love for him even today. But he being a thorough gentleman has never expressed his love for me. Similar is the case with all his ladies he worked with right from Madhubala and more. They were beautiful respected ladies.Dilip Sahab always respected and has a lot of regards for them. To know more about Madhubala and his ladies you will have to read the book.”

Dilip Kumar achieved his undisputed status as India’s outstanding film actor through sheer hard work and astonishing dedication. Acting in only fifty-four films in nearly as many years, he helped create landmark films from the 1940s to the 1980s, including Shaheed, Jogan, Devdas, Naya Daur, Mughal-e-Azam, Gunga Jumna, Sagina Mahato and Shakti, to name a few.

Dilip Kumar never agreed to do a cameo or a special appearance in any film. He stopped working after his 1998 film Qila. In a time where scripts are being written specially for veteran actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, why did the tragedy king retire?  We have heard and read stories about Dilip Saab, but reading from his own experience will bring up the actual facts. We hope all our inquisitiveness about him is answered in this biography.
