Finally!! With the rainy season in full swing, Bengal's beloved fish – Hilsa enters my kitchen.
Till now I was feeling like missing something this monsoon. For Bengalis Hilsa or Ilish holds a special place in their heart. The affection has gone to a point that Bengali restaurants hold “Ilish Utsav” or “Hilsa festival” in this season.

To make this fish lot of ways are there, but first day I prepared Ilish Macher Kumro Jhol... a simple yet special preparation...The flavour of soft pumpkins blend with the fish makes it an exotic item to relish.
Ilish Hilsa fish- 5/6 pieces
Pumpkin - cut into square pieces
2 slited Green Chillies
1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
1/2 tsp Kalonji
2 tbsp Mustard oil
Salt to taste
1.Marinate the fish with turmeric and salt for 10-15 minutes.
2.In a pan, heat the oil, fish and fry lightly for 2-3 minutes remove and keep aside.
4. Add the kalonji, 1 green chilly and saute until crackles.
6. Add the pumpkin pieces.
7. Add the turmeric- and fry for another minute.
8. Add one cup of water, pumpkin, green chillies, salt and bring to a boil. Adjust salt. Add the fried fish.
9.Simmer for 10-12 minutes until pumpkins are cooked. Add one spoon of beaten curd to enhance the taste.
